Our Research Lines

Our team investigates topics related to the taxonomy, biology and ecology of benthic invertebrates,mainly from soft-bottom sediments. We are interested in applying sound scientific knowledge on ecosystem structure and functioning for supporting monitoring and conservation policies. We try to use and combine robust sampling designs both in the field and in lab to better investigate our research topics.

{ Taxonomy }

Our research is mainly focused on marine annelids, with emphasis in:

* Traditional morphological taxonomy and molecular phylogeny

* Biogeography and genetic connectivity

* Biological parameters and behavior ecology

{ Benthic Ecology }

Our research is mainly related to meio- and macrobenthic community structure:

* Spatial and temporal variability patterns

* Biological interactions

* Functional ecology and ecosystem functioning

{ Environmental Monitoring & Assessment }

This research line is focused on the evaluation of anthropogenic impact:

* Recovery and recolonization of disturbed systems

* Oil and urban sewage disturbance

* Ecotoxicology and biomarkers

{ Coastal Environment Management }

This research line is mainly focused on mangrove and salt marsh management:

* Natural dynamics

* Social dynamics and appropriation of natural resources

* Natural resources and socioenvironmental conflicts
